Vision Research Phantom VEO 610 High-Speed Camera Released
Vision Research recently released a new “entry-level” high-speed camera: the Phantom VEO 610. This camera can shoot in HD 720p @ 7420 frames per second and a maximum frame rate of 218.970fps in 320 x 12. Let’s take a closer look at it!
Vision Research is well-known for making cameras capable of shooting at very high frame rates. In January, the company launched the Phantom S991, which can shoot in DCI 4K at up to 937 frames per second.
The Phantom VEO lineup of cameras is Vision Research’s “entry-level” into the high-speed shooting world. Indeed, Phantom VEO cameras record in lower resolutions and are designed for studio use.
Phantom VEO 610: features
The newest Phantom VEO 610 has a lot of similarities with the VEO 1310 that was released two years ago. From the outside, you can’t tell the difference between the two; Vision Research even used the same pictures from the VEO 1310 for the VEO 610.
In a nutshell, the VEO 610 is available in two versions – L (light) and S (full) – depending on your needs. The camera features a 1.2Mpx CMOS sensor with a native 6,400 ISO sensitivity in color and 25,000 ISO in monochrome.
Here is a quick tour of all the inputs/outputs ports on the camera body:
- L and S versions: one mini-SDI and one HDMI video output, a 12V battery input, and a GB Ethernet port. The VEO 610 has either 18/36 / 72GB of high-speed internal RAM.
- Both versions are available in Nikon, PL, C, or Canon EF lens mounts. The lens mount is user interchangeable.
- The S version has additional ports: TC input/output, trigger, strobe, F-sync, and Ready port. Also, it has additional SDI ports, on-camera controls, and a Fischer port.
- Moreover, the Phantom VEO 610 S-version has a built-in CFast 2.0 port (up to 512GB).
Frame rates and recording formats
The main difference between the Phantom VEO 610 and the VEO 1310 is the maximum frame rates. Indeed, the VEO 610 is an “entry-level” camera, so it records at slower speeds:
- 1280 x 960 at 5,610 fps
- 1280 x 720 at 7,420 fps
- 960 x 960 at 6.890 fps
- 640 x 480 at 15,530 fps
- 320 x 12 at a whopping 218,970 fps
The VEO 610 can record in various formats, including Cine RAW and Cine Compressed, Apple ProRes, Uncompressed Quicktime, JPEG / DNG / RAW / DPX, to list a few.
Price and availability
The Vision Research Phantom VEO 610 is available now, and even if Vision Research lists this camera as an “entry-level” camera, they don’t mention any price. It looks like there’s currently no official information about it.
Also, it is worth mentioning that the VEO 610 can be “upgraded” to a VEO 1310 later down the road if needed.
